 METASTATIC BREAST CANCER NETWORK mbcnet@gmail.com www.mbcnetwork.org 888-500-0370
What is MBCN?
MBCN is a national independent advocacy group of and for individuals with metastatic breast cancer. We give those living with stage 4 breast cancer a greater voice in the breast cancer community.
Who formed the organization?
MBCN was founded in 2004 by Jane Soyer and Nina Schulman. When diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, they experienced feelings of isolation from the very groups established to provide support. They felt the stigma of being a ‘failure’ in the breast cancer community. Their belief that cancer cannot be viewed as a disease from which one is either a ‘survivor’ or to which one has succumbed, fueled their desire to advocate for change.
What is MBCN's mission?
To change the way metastatic breast cancer is viewed by the breast cancer community and the public at large. MBCN is THE proactive voice in the breast cancer community. MBCN is grounded on the belief that those living with the disease, those who may not survive, need to be recognized and included. MBCN promotes the view that it is up to all of us, metastatic and non-metastatic alike, to join together and fight for life-extending treatments.
MBCN supports and helps promote appropriate programs undertaken by other organizations to benefit those with metastatic breast cancer.
Are there membership dues or fees?
There are no dues or fees to be a member of this patient-led not-for-profit 501 ( c ) (3) organization.
What MBCN programs and activities are scheduled?
MBCN strives to help those living with metastatic breast cancer be their own advocate through providing hope, education and information on treatments and coping with the disease. Drs. Eric Winer & Nancy Lin at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston are hosting our 2009 conference HOPE FOR THE FUTURE. We continue to include more cities and states in Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day as a means of having our collective voice heard. We are presently reaching out to those living with stage 4 disease across the country with our soon-to-be-produced & distributed 'kit' for the newly-diagnosed metastatic patient.
We presently have available: an 8-page brochures for the Newly Diagnosed Metastatic Breast Cancer Patient; audio-tapes posted on our website from our Managing Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference at MD Anderson Cancer Center; metastatic breast cancer t-shirts for all metastatic walkers; 'markers' of generic & trade name chemo drugs; a 60-second Public Service Announcement to bring awareness to metastatic breast cancer.
